Magic We are on our way!!!! The 17th Signal Battalion Association will hold its 2010 reunion in the inner har-bor area of the historical city of Baltimore in 30 September3 October 2010. The 17th Signal Battalion Association held its 2009 Board of Directors meeting in September to scope out locations and find you the best bang for the buck in Baltimore. We eventually settled on the Brookshire Suites, 120 E. Lombard Street, located two easy blocks from the harbor. Our able Treasurer Joe Donovan negotiated a total (including all taxes) of $119 a night for a suite!!! There are smoking rooms available on the first floor. This hotel will be providing us free happy hours each night, free meeting rooms, and will be hosting our banquet (Maryland buffet) as well. Our distinguished guest speaker will be 17th alumni (Battalion S3 for Tom Theroux in the early 80s), LTG Carroll Pollett, Director of DISA and Commander Joint Task Force-Global Network Operations. We also hope to enjoy a slide presentation of Tanzania by Association mem-bers Fred & Paula Fertik, and for those who remember Mama Marias in 2006 in South Phillydinner night out to Little Italy. Or maybe the seafood placeMosthat Joe & Sam checked out, with crab cakes the size of a grapefruit! Our Historian, Monroe Manning has arranged a guided tour by the National Park Service along with a flag ceremony at Fort McHenryjust minutes from the hotel. Fort McHenry is the birthplace of our Star Spangled Banner, served as a prison for Southern Sympathizers during the Civil War, and served in the defense of Baltimore in the War of 1812. The bus will take our group from the hotel bright and early Friday am to the Fort and drop us off at the Visitors Center upon return. The cost for the bus and the tour is $25. From the Visitors Center you are free to return to the hotel or to tour the HarborI recommend taking the water taxis ($9.00 for an all day ticket) for transportation to over 35 attractions and neighbor-hoods to include: National Aquarium, Little Italy, Science Center, Federal Hill, American Visionary Art Mu-seum, Maritime Park and the African American Museum. Baseball fans can walk to Camden Yard to watch a Baltimore Orioles gamehome games that weekend! For our ship fansthe USS Constellation and other historic ships are docked within 3 blocks of the hotel. BWI airport is only a short light rail trip ($5.00 and a terminal 3 blocks from the hotel) so, get ship shape, bring your walking shoes, and prepare to explore the friendly city of Baltimore with your comrades from the 17th! Fill out your registration form found on pages 21 & 22 of this newsletter and mail it in to the Secretary before 10 September. Check out our hotel on the web at www.harbormagic.com! |
